Lake Cathie is a small coastal township of approx 6000 people and is located 18 km south of Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
The town is framed by a backdrop of forested hills, tranquil waters of the lake, and the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. The Lake holds a diversity of habitats for shore and water birds and includes threatened and protected migratory species such as the Little Turn and Pied Oystercatcher.
The Port Macquarie Hastings Council has indicated that it is considering a Planned Retreat policy for 17 homes in Illaroo Road, as a way of combating coastal erosion. Planned Retreat occurs when Council voluntarily purchase property from owners usually at land value or less and then ask the owners to retreat from their property. The property is demolished and the land then becomes Council property.
If Illaroo Road was wiped off the map it would have a catastrophic effect on Lake Cathie businesses, tourism and property prices. Clearly we can’t at any cost allow one of the Mid North Coast’s most unique and precious pieces of coastline to just erode into the ocean and be lost forever. It is clear from the Port Macquarie Hastings Council that they can fix this erosion problem, and has previously done this in other parts of the Hastings. To just walk away from the problem and allow the coastline and homes to just erode into the ocean really does defy belief.
We need your community support and it will be very easy for you to assist in this matter. What we ask is that you, your family, your friends and work colleagues provide Council with a Submission on why it is important to preserve and protect this part of our coastline.
